Nearly 40 years after the infamous and gruesome “Gypsy Hill murders” shocked the Bay Area, California investigators said Thursday they have the man behind at least two of the five killings. Who got the suspect? Medford PD. Rodney Halbower, now 66, came into our town in on a cold day in December, 1986, and brutally attacked a 22 year old female by Bi-Mart, stabbing her several times. He had escaped from prison in Nevada, where he was being held for rape, just days prior to the attack here. Our officers found him that day, and after a car chase through Medford, we got him. He has been in custody ever since. In fact, when he was finally extradited to Oregon, in 2013, to face our charges, is when the DNA was matched to the serial murders.
