Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power. ~Abraham Lincoln This quotation is a variation on the familiar theme that power corrupts, but what makes it stand out from the majority is the explicit comparison between power and adversity. Lincoln’s point was that while adversity is said to be very hard on people, the facts do not bear that out. In fact, in many cases the greatest adversity has been shown to bring out the very best in humanity. Power on the other hand, is much more likely to bring out the worst in people, even if that seems counter-intuitive. Power brings temptation, and for many that is the hardest thing to resist.
