Nearly all polities say that they are “democracies”, but their political arrangements differ greatly. Persons without sufficient experience may think that their particular political arrangement is, or should be, normative. Such an attitude reflects ignorance and intolerance. Currently some students in Hong Kong (an affiliated part ofthe Chinese polity) claim that they should have the right to put forward whomever they wish as a candidate for office. The Chinese polity insists that it has the right to vet candidates for political office. The Hong Kong students (possibly with American assistance) insist that their approach is “true” democracy. The selection and vetting process in America does not produce superior results. We observe the recent candidacy of John McCain and Sarah Palin, the election of Bush and Obama, etc. Vast sums are required for successful candidacies and campaigns. Families of great wealth have a distinct advantage. The public is greatly influenced by the media. Media shills write what the press barons want. Is there any rational ground for asserting that the American system of candidate selection is better than that of China?
