Nearly twelve thousand prisoners at Pelican Bay and other California prisons went on hunger strike in 2011--some refusing food for a total of six weeks--to protest keeping prisoners secluded under torturous conditions in extreme isolation units (SHUs). We must pressure California to stop its practice of long-term extreme isolation before prisoners starve to death!
