Need some opinions on what to do.. A mare recent bought (about 2-3 weeks before Christmas) had continuous on/off swelling in her right hind ankle. It started the week before Christmas at the Holiday Classic barrel race in Jackson. I thought she was just stocked up so I walked her around a bit, waited till the next day to see if swelling would go down. Next day its even worse so I went to see the vet at the show who specializes in performance horses. He said it was an infection and put a sweat on it and gave me antibiotics, told me 3 days later to take off the sweat and antibiotics only lasted 4 days. Her leg looked completely healed he told me in another 3 days I could ride. So I did. The next day the swelling had returned. So I got in touch with him he said not to worry a little swellings normal. I was still worried so I got a second opinion from my vet, he looked for abscesses and anything that could cause it. He said it must be an infect bc he couldnt find anything else either. He told me I can return to my normal work out routine with her and treat w/ cold water therapy. Well its been quite some time and my mare still swells cold water therapy does work and reduces the swelling. Should I get x-Rays anyone ever dealt with anything like this? I dont want to mess up anything by continuing exercise, but really need to keep her in shape for this coming up season. I will post more pics on comments. We are in south Louisiana, so its very humid and what not. Its not as swollen now as the pic I just posted. But she also has pitting edema. Thank you in advance for all help.
