Need to vent. Sorry if some of you parents dont like to hear this, however, too bad. Jeff and I went to the movies tonight to see Maleficent. Anticipating a bit of a crowd, we arrived early, got our popcorn and soda, and settled in for the previews. A few minutes later a herd of boys, I would guess ages 10-12 entered the theater and the noise level in the theater was somewhere between a Chuckie Cheese and the tarmac at OHare. I gave it a few minutes for the boys to get settled and when they didnt and when the parent chaperones did not take control of the situation, I stood up, turned to them and yelled Excuse me, but you are in a public place, and not the only people in this theater! You could hear a pin drop after that. The mother, through an awkward smile tried to tell me that I was being inappropriate since the movie wasnt on yet and her husband promised to keep the noise down. Just because the movie hasnt started doesnt mean that it is okay to let the children you are supervising run amok and disturb everyone else. Children will be children, and I dont fault them for doing what children do, but if you are going to bring a large group of children into a public space without teaching them about appropriate behavior for being in public, and setting out the consequences for inappropriate behavior, nor are you willing to take control of the situation, then dont be shocked and surprised when someone else does it for you.
