Negation refers to the process of forming negative sentences. Negative sentences serves a number of functions such as making an assertion about something and denying the truth of something that has been said. There are two kinds of negation. First, verbal negation and second, nonverbal negation. Verbal negation takes the negative particle ‘not’. In non verbal negation the sentences use negative word or negative affixes. Verbal negation can be made by adding ‘not’ as in these examples. They werenot (weren’t) in a hurry. I am not (am’t) sorry. I didnot (didn’t) find you there. He does not (doesn’t) know you. Non –verbal negation can be made using either negative word or negative affixes. The most common negative words are nobody, nothing, nowhere, neither..nor, never, no, none, neither of them etc. The most common negative affixes are un, in, dis, ir, non,im, ab, mis, etc. Nobody was there. We have never been there. We have said nothing. Neither you nor I am to blame. They are unlucky. The verbal negation and non verbal negation can be used interchangeably. They are unfortunate. / They aren’t fortunate. Undo it. / Do it. He looks abnormal. / He doesn’t look normal. He is dishonest. /He isn’t honest. There was nobody in the room. /There wasn’t anybody in the room. We went nowhere yesterday./ We didn’t go any where yesterday. I have said nothing. / I haven’t said anything.
