Neglect and crisis. Two things that were particularly thematic in my day today. Like many of us do, I often lean more on the teachings of my elders (parents) because as a Samoan I am not afraid to credit my parents for imparting invaluable wisdom on Peter, Lisha, and myself. I understand that in the Freudian/Constructionist way, BLAMING parents helps us cope with everyday challenges and confrontations with our individual weaknesses and shortcomings. In the Samoan way however, our parents are QUICK to gladly point out your weaknesses and shortcomings whereby you are then expected to take the feedback, grow up, and fix your situation. Of course, there are many variations of this approach to life, varying between the psychotic/tragic to empowering/successful. But this bold approach someway somehow gives a Samoan the direction they need in life--for the most part. This brings me back to neglect and crisis. My father always says that life is a war and the enemy is stupidity. Most of our stupid moments will always be tied to carelessness and neglect. Moments of greatness almost always come from serious consideration and commitment. Your goal therefore in life is to be your best self. Common sense, yet easier said than done. Crisis. My mother says that crisis is best managed by those who always keep a calm, calculated mind. Enough said.
