Negotiation Update #21 The Union Bargaining Committee met with Company representatives Thursday evening from 4 pm to 9 pm. The Union demanded that the Company drop its proposal to substitute a Defined Contribution Pension Plan for the current Defined Benefit Plan for future employees. The Union also proposed that the Company add a lump sum bonus for all employees to its “Best and Final” contract proposal. The Company responded that it will not consider modifying its proposal that future employees will be excluded from participation in the Defined Benefit Plan. Additionally, the Company repeated its position that it will not increase the financial cost of its “Best and Final” offer. However, tentative agreements were reached on several previously open and unresolved Union contract language proposals. Also, several disputes that have occurred since the contract expired on January 19, 2014 and which are not arbitrable since the binding arbitration provision contained in the expired contract is not enforceable were addressed during the Thursday evening meeting. The Company strongly urged the membership to ratify the revised proposal. Failure of the membership to ratify the contract, the Company warned, may lead the Company to enact legal options that are available to it. A meeting to explain and to discuss the Company’s “Best and Final” offer will be held very soon. This will be followed by a membership ratification vote a few days after the explanation meeting. Watch this space and look for notices in the workplace for details of these future events.
