Negotiations went into the wee hours last night to gain my services as a fan. In the end it came down to tradition and an ill-timed visit by Justin Bieber. Everyone knows my allegiance to my alma mater, THE University of Cincinnati. And theres no team in the NFL that has more former Bearcats on their roster than the Philadelphia Eagles. Conner Barwin, Trent Cole, Brent Celek and Jason Kelce. After Walter Payton retired, I needed a new favorite player. Randall Cunningham had burst onto the scene about this time and defined what a mobile QB was going to be. I had his jersey, I had the Eagles Starter jacket. They were my team. Over the years the Eagles havent been as enjoyable as I became a Rams fan and the Eagles were a constant threat to the Greatest Show on Turf. Now with Chip Kelly its a new day. But newness is not what I want. I want tradition. I want championships. For my NFC team, I have signed on with the Green Bay Packers. Nothing beats Lambeau Field in January and for a long time nobody beat the Packers at Lambeau Field in January. From Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers the team has been relevant in the championship discussion since 1992, winning 4 Super Bowls and two since 1996. Ill take my Lambeau leap this week when MY PACKERS host the Eagles. Seems fitting. In the AFC it came down to The Terrible Towel vs The Black Hole. Ill be honest, through the entire process I was ready to make the leap to the Steel Curtain. Maybe it was years of being beaten down by the Steelers and developing Stockholm Syndrome. I even asked about getting a Steelers jersey. But when I discussed it with Amanda Stewart she told me there was no way I could be a Steelers fan. But against her wishes I was ready to make the move...until...Justin Bieber showed up to hang around with the Steelers prior to their lose to the Jets. I just cant, in good conscience, pick a team that pals around with Justin Bieber. Well that and Ben Roethlisberger went to Miami and is a D-Bag. Plus, the Steelers dont have a cool theme song like this. I know the Raiders havent done anything lately. Im used to that as a Bengals fan. But they have the history behind them. They have the coolest uniforms in the game today and, Chris Berman aside, when Oakland is good the NFL just seems better. So give me another bay area team to follow even if they end up in LA in a few years. Ill be rooting for David Carr and the boys to get win #1 versus the evil Philip Rivers and the Chargers this week. youtube/watch?v=YXj7I1RzLSE
