Nehru rejected Sheikh’s draft of 1952 agreement: Bhim Singh ‘For Him JK Was More Important Than His Friendship’ Srinagar, June 14: Chief Patron of National Panthers Party Prof Bhim Singh on Friday revealed that draft of 1952 agreement framed by late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah was outrightly rejected by the late Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru. In a statement here Bhim Singh said: “The so-called Agreement in 1952 was never conceived between Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. Late Sheikh Abdullah had made a speech on the floors of the Legislative Assembly in 1952 threatening Nehru to accede his (Sheikh’s) demand to not to introduce fundamental rights in JK and desist from extending jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of India to JK among other demands. All such demands were meant for keeping J&K a Sheikhdom and outside the scope of any fundamental rights and freedoms. Sheikh had argued on the floor of the House that J&K has been liberated from the Maharaja’s rule and to introduce reforms to kill feudalism in the state, the National Conference government had taken the land of the landlords without compensation. He had argued that the people of JK do not deserve right to freedoms of speech, expression and others for a decade.” “This speech of Sheikh Abdullah has been coined as Delhi Agreement by National Conference although Jawahar Lal Nehru in his speech in Parliament expressed his government’s inability to accept the proposed agreement. Nehru refused to entertain this agreement. There was no question of signing the so-called Delhi Agreement. Nehru, in order to win over Sheikh Abdullah sent him as a part of the UN delegation to attend UN Session in New York in 1953. Sheikh Abdullah was encouraged by the CIA and the planners of the South-Asian Bloc in the White House to go for the implementation of Dixon Plan. Dixon Plan had assured creation of Islamic Republic of Greater Kashmir. The new map in the Dixon Plan included the areas of Rajouri-Poonch and Doda Districts (Muslim majority districts in Jammu Pradesh). Sheikh Abdullah was assured full backing of the White House,” Bhim Singh claimed. “Sheikh Abdullah riding the CIA tiger fired India at a public meeting in RS Pura, a terrible miscalculation to choose a border area in Jammu Pradesh declaring that he would have independent Kashmir if his proposed Agreement of 1952 was not implemented. This made Nehru to change his mind vis-à-vis Sheikh Abdullah and sent urgent communication to the then Sadar-e-Riyasat, Yuvraj Karan Singh to dismiss Sheikh Abdullah in the greater national interest on August 9, 1953,” said Bhim Singh. “People of J&K have been living the age of oppression and suppression under the National Conference rule abetted and defended by the Congress leadership. This is the cause that has led even highly educated youth to rebel against the tyrant rulers in JK. The Congress leadership failed to appreciate Nehru’s wisdom in removing Sheikh Abdullah who happened to be a close and intimate friend of Nehru. For Nehru J&K was more important than his friendship,” he added.
