Neighbourhood Watch CCTV cameras Somerset West NHW now has an impressive array of CCTV cameras installed to help in the fight against crime. With static overview and License Plate Recognition cameras that are capable of high definition imagery, the system is already proving its worth in identifying criminals and helping SAPS build evidentially strong cases for court. Numerous vehicles concerned in or linked to burglaries and motor vehicle theft have been identified and several arrests have been made here or in other parts of the Western Cape as a result. We also share details with other NHW camera groups to help ensure a coordinated approach in targeting known criminals. The vehicle that was used by thieves who posed as Estate Agents whilst committing several thefts was identified by our camera system which led to them being caught in the Eastern Cape. The cameras have also been used to assist following motor vehicle accidents and also a case against a taxi which resulted in the driver having his vehicle scrapped and license revoked. The cameras have been funded through individual voluntary donations and are maintained at personal expense. We will always look at opportunities to extend the system where there are sufficient members of the community who are willing to contribute.
