Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist. As much as I admire him as a spokesman for the scientific method, he recently made remarks about the science of genetic modification that displayed ignorance of the issues when he equated the ten thousand year history of agricultural selective breeding, that is, artificial selection, to the twenty year old technique of transferring genes from one species to another. Here is a world renowned geneticist, David Suzuki, discussing that very same point and coming to a radically different conclusion. So should I listen to an astrophysicist, or to a geneticist, on whether GMO crops drenched in herbicide, or corn saturated with a biotoxin, are safe to eat? Which would you listen to?
