Neill Blomkamps Chappie is certainly on my must-see list of spring movies. The first trailer made the film appear character-driven and a bit offbeat. Small, but in a good way. This new trailer might make it look like a more conventional Hollywood action film (Short Circuit meets Robocop as some have dubbed it), but Im hoping for a few interesting layers beyond that. District 9 was an incredible first film for Blomkamp, and even though many were not as impressed with his follow-up film, Elysium, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Its important to support filmmakers like Blomkamp, who have a unique style and voice. It would have been easy for him to cash a big studio paycheck, by directing a reboot or sequel to a popular franchise (and his name was on EVERYBODYs shortlist after District 9), but hes chosen to continue telling his own stories.
