Nelson Mandela, Madiba as he is affectionately known, is, it seems from reports emanating from Pretoria, in his last moments amongst us in this world. We have a very special thought for him and our prayers are that he should depart this world in peace and honoured by all, even his enemies of yesteryears of the apartheid regime. He has suffered tremendously for the emancipation of his people. His thoughts and deeds are inspirational. When he will be no more, tributes will flow in their thousands and the entire world will no doubt reflect on the greatness of this man, a greatness achieved through his actions and wisdom. Never arrogant, he has always displayed a communion with the common man and a capacity to listen and understand his fellow being. A great man indeed! I am privileged to have been closely associated with him during my years at the OAU and as Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Mauritius. His personal support for and encouragement to me during the various Summits of the OAU and SADC helped shape my views on Africa, our continent. Like millions of people around the globe he is constantly in my thoughts and prayers! An icon indeed! When he is no more, we shall say: "Un homme est passé!" God Bless.
