Nerd alert: Interesting article by Jefford. In it he argues that variety may mean less (may be an impediment to understanding) than place and culture. Interesting point, based on the observable fact that varieties that may be genetically identical (or almost) can give enormously different - unrecognizable - results based on where they are grown and how they were made. I partly agree, but what we are also facing are the shortcomings of the DNA methods normally applied. It is rare indeed that the full genome of a variety is sequenced, so we are normally left with comparing the same 400 base pairs. This leads to ridiculous results such as pinot noir and pinot gris being identical, although they are observably not. I think we need to deepen the research here, not give up on variety as a concept. decanter/news/blogs/expert/584498/jefford-on-monday-of-jellyfish-and-guardsmen?utm_source=Cheetahmail&utm_medium=email&utm_content=news+alert+link+041113&utm_campaign=Newsletter-041113
