Net Update by Bill Roecker For FishingVideos January 29, 2014 Just Wow “Well, not much I can say, just wow! We had another excellent day of fishing, with most of the fish (Yellowfin tuna) in the 140 to 190-pound range, with three going over the 200-pound mark. Lucky anglers today were: Joe Amagrande (216 pound Yellowfin tuna), Robert DeLoach (231 pound Yellowfin tuna), and Richard Keeley (252 pound Yellowfin tuna). “We released 32 Yellowfin today in the 90 to 150-pound range. We will start our fresh well tomorrow. We made a tank of bait, and now we are on the anchor. No Wahoo today, but we are hoping things will change on the Wahoo end, soon.” In The First Hour “We got the trip started on the right foot this morning,” posted Royal Star owner-operator Randy Toussaint January 27, “with a 220 hitting the deck within the first hour of angling. After a good morning bite we slow scratched the rest of the afternoon and were able to piece together a fine day. Good grade overall with five of the 28 tuna we kept breaking the 200lb mark while another five weighed in at 150 to 190. Nacho Camarena is in today’s shot making Oceanside proud with a 231. The next day, Toussaint posated this: “Considerably slower today with inconsistent conditions and an overall lack of life prompting a move to a new location this afternoon. Fortunately we did have a decent morning shot that produced two more over 200 and 12 other stock grade fish.” The Local Angler Three years in the making, Brandon Hayward’s newest book, The Local Angler, comes in at nearly 300 pages and features 100-percent color throughout. The current cycle of local fishing is unlike any of cycles past; the book takes a heavy look at the coastal seabass fishery and everything squid fishing, from making it to pinning it on the hooks. Seasons, styles, tackle and in depth looks at new styles of fishing — like balloons and squid — are discussed at length. For the private boater there are sections on anchoring, setting up on spots and how to find spots. Zones, tactics and how each region fishes differently makes up the crux of the sportboat section that covers everything from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Fishing with finbait and the art of the flyline makes up a heavy chunk of the sportboat section, which also covers everything from surface iron fishing to how squid fishing on sportboats is different than skiff fishing.
