Net neutrality petition gets a million signatures - A federal court has ruled that the FCC does not regulate broadband Internet services, opening the door for your Internet service provider to change, censor, control what you see. A MoveOn petition on Net Neutrality asks Congress to fix the problem: civic.moveon.org/save_the_internet/ Why is this important now? Congress is currently drafting a bill that would revise and update the 1996 Telecommunications Act. The current draft does address network neutrality, but the language could definitely be stronger. For example, the bill states that certain classes of Internet providers may not unreasonably impair, interfere, restrict or limit applications or services, but offers no definition of what is unreasonable. commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=1234951 Its important to note that its not only Internet service providers who are cashing in on unreasonable restriction of applications or services. To be useful and effective, the law must apply to the curators of those services as well. What about Internet search itself? A lot of new services have arguably become critical to free markets, free commerce, free speech... your ability to conduct your life and business in any sort of free, self-directed manner.
