Never Again Chronicles #1 The Best Toy I Never Want When I was 5 years old living in Taiwan, I wanted a remote control toy car. At that time, it was as fancy as a toy could get. The neighbors kids had one and everyday after school I would go there and play with it. They would play for hours and for a few minutes they let me try and as if they had all the power they would snatch it back. I wanted a toy remote car so bad. I asked my dad to buy me one. My father a kind man, a preacher man, very frugal and also poor at that time knew there was no way we could afford such a novelty. I knew he wanted it for me to show off the the other kids that his son could also have such a luxury took me in a car one day and said, Son lets go get that remote car. It cost 300 NT Taiwanese dollars and at that time it was a small fortune! I held the car in my hands, eye bright, heart pounding, couldnt contain the excitement and even opened it in the car. On the way home, dad picked up mom from long day of work. To make ends meat, mom worked double jobs. All the way home, I can hear mom and dad yelling, fighting and arguing about the purchase. Even I was 5, I felt it was my fault they were fighting. I thought why are we so poor that we cant buy nice things. I thought if we had more money, maybe dad and mom wouldnt fight. That moment was a defining moment. As I thought to myself, never again do I want mom and dad to fight over money, over anything that I wanted. It was then I decided to be a self starter. If I wanted something, I was going to save, to hustle, to make it on my own. Maybe that explains why I started to sell candy in elementary school. Collect aluminum cans around my neighborhood for money as a kid. Why I wanted to hustle so I can buy my parents toys. Never again do I want something and have others suffer for it.
