Never cease to be amazed at the things I find in old diaries!! Laugh!! Ive just been reminded of matters surrounding the accompanying picture, which is a sketch of the ghost that allegedly haunts a huge, old house on the outskirts of the Black Country. The site concerned is, nowadays, a beautiful family house..... but at the time the drawing hails from, it was more of a communal home, being used by local students and the like. The property itself is said to have Tudor foundations, but the bulk of the property from that particular time had been a tragic victim of fire many years ago. The body of the current building is mainly Victorian, with some more modern additions. As to reported activity, there was a peculiar banging sound experienced most nights around 8.30, which sounded like a cricket ball being bounced; a loud thud, followed by a smaller thud.... then a rolling noise. Then the process would be repeated, etc. This was frequently heard to travel from the first, to second floor..... then back to the first again. Duration of effect ran from between (at least) half an hour to an hour at a time! The house apparently had a cold spot, situated on a landing leading to the first floor. I was told that, if you slowly swept your hand across a certain part of this landing, you could actually feel the temperature change as you progressed...... going in and out of a section of air that felt like you had shut your hand in a freezer. The spot apparently had height to it too, as the taller amongst the occupants said they could detect where the coldness ended as you got nearer the ceiling. One night - in front of witnesses - one particular occupant was in the process of poo-pooing the idea of the existence of ghosts, when a glass was seen to lift itself up from its resting place and suddenly hurtle against the wall behind where the lad was sitting!! His face was said to be an absolute picture!! When it came to the apparition itself, this was seen by many people in different places around the house and grounds. My corresponded had been sitting revising in the kitchen one day when she saw the figure our of the corner of her eye. (She admits shed been aware of something standing there for some while before actually turning and realising what it was!! Up until that point, she had thought it was merely the kitchen bin she could see in her peripheral vision!! Laugh!!) She said the figure was standing close enough for her to have reached her arm out and touched...... wearing what appeared to be Edwardian clothing. Her instant response was to leap onto the table she was seated at and fly over it in panic! Having reached the other side and turned...... the figure was gone! On another occasion the girl had been returning from the shops and looked through the ground-floor window of one of two rooms that were kept locked by the landlord. On scrutinising the contents through the grimy glass, she said she looked around the room inside and saw the same figure again! The shock sent her reeling back from the windows! Having made efforts to look up the history of the site, in an endeavour to discover just who the ghost might have been, they spoke to an elderly, local resident who said that a member of his family had once been in service at the house in the earlier part of the 20th Century. She had said that another servant had apparently become pregnant, out of wedlock, and had hanged herself from the shame as a result!? Interestingly, however, the correspondent (who says that she is psychic) had, over the time in the house, come up with the name of Maud, for some reason..... In mentioning this to the elderly man, she says that he had gone rather pale and said that he had known a Maud..... but this wasnt the maid mentioned! He had said that this used to be the wife of the house owner, who had passed away from cancer in the early 1930s. Most interestingly, he had said that she always tended to wear Edwardian style clothing, instead of more modern designs for that time, as it had been the fashion of her youth and she had never really deviated from the style......!?
