Never really meant to publish this on FB. I write things every day that I never post. But now, just having read Alberto Manguels NYT review of Darntons Censors at Work, I am thinking I should share it. No one who has spent time in Europe will be shocked that this poster appears on a Paris shopping street, between a piano dealer and a furniture store. It advertises a feminist play which has had great reviews. But on this side of the water, a friend wonders if FB will allow it on my public timeline. Our society prefers to prohibit such displays, automatically turning them into objects of fascination. Parisians out with their kids see this poster and think Oh, a play. I wonder if its any good? When they get home, they do not fear their children will be harmed by seeing a cartoon image of a pierced nipple. But put this poster up on Main Street USA and you will have-- at the minimum-- angry phone calls, and talk of a boycott. If Rush Windbag were aware of my saying these things he would no doubt lump me with his favorite straw man, The Hate America Crowd. But thats neither the point nor the case. We need to grow up to a point where we do not outlaw everything that does not conform to a childish fantasy of protecting morality.
