Never say die! Goonies sequel announced by director Richard Donner who reveals plans to bring back all of the cast It weaved its own particular brand of movie magic back in 1985, with legions of fans enchanted by the group of teenagers embarking on an adventure to discover hidden treasure and save their homes from demolition. And now 30 years on, a Goonies sequel is being planned. Director Richard Donner confirmed the news to TMZ, adding that he wants to bring the entire cast back together for the film. When asked by the website if he plans to make a comic book movie in the vein of Spider-Man, Donner replied: If you call Goonies a comic book. Were doing a sequel. He elaborated further while being quizzed on whether any of the stars are going to return for the movie. Hopefully all of them, he claimed. The cast of the Steven Spielberg-directed movie have experienced mixed fortunes since finding fame on The Goonies. Then an in-demand teenage star - appearing in films such as Stand By Me, The Lost Boys and Gremlins, - Corey Feldman, now 42, battled drug abuse before taking roles in smaller movies. The past few years have seen the actor, who played Clark Mouth Devereaux in The Goonies aged 13, appear in a reality show with his friend the late Corey Haim and take on hosting duties for a web show. Despite Saturdays news, Feldman has always been adamant that there would be no Goonies sequel. There is no Goonies 2! he wrote on his blog. I’m sorry but it’s just not gonna happen. It seems every six months the rumour mill gets started up again and people run around both excited and angry, and eventually I have to respond. I would have loved to do this movie under the direction of Donner (who wouldn’t?) but it is just not meant to be. Hope that’s settled. Course now that Ive said that they’ll do it. Feldmans co-star Sean Astin, whose character Mikey Walsh was arguable the heart of the movie, has worked steadily since 1985, striking box office gold as Hobbit Samwise Gamgee in the Lord Of The Rings franchise. Astin has always remained positive that a Goonies sequel would get made. In a 2007 interview, he said that Goonies 2 is an absolute certainty, but hinted that the film would be more about passing the torch to a new generation. He told MTV: The writings on the wall when theyre releasing the [Goonies] DVD in such numbers. Steven [Spielberg] and Dick [Donner] and all the powers that be... they really feel like the thing that made the movie strong was that it was about kids, so they really want to make the next movie about kids... the next generation of Goonies. And theyve had a hard time tackling that. I have three children and Coreys got a kid now. So as we now all have kids who are coming into the age that we were when we made the movie, its more likely to me that theyll figure out how to design a story that will satisfy the older audience in terms of connecting with the original 1985 Goonies, and then [also] create this new thing. But Astin remains keen to join the gang for another adventure: I remain as open-minded and willing to participate as I have ever been, he said. Their co-star Josh Brolin, who played Brandon Walsh in the film aged 17, has perhaps been the most successful of the cast over the last decade, appearing in critically acclaimed movies No Country For Old Men, True Grit and Milk for which he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. And despite being an in-demand movie actress in the 1980s, Martha Plimpton, who starred as Stef Steinbrenner in the film has stuck largely to TV in recent years, winning two Emmy nominations for her role in Fox comedy Raising Hope. Kerri Green, who played Brolins love interest - cheerleader Andy - is still acting but also founded her own production company. A reboot of the film would see a return to acting for a few of the child stars who left the profession. Jeff Cohen now works as an entertainment lawyer - a profession far removed from his infamous truffle shuffle as the tubby Chunk. Vietnamese-born actor Jonathan Ke Quan, who appeared in Indiana Jones movie The Temple Of Doom before taking on the role of Richard Data Wang in The Goonies, now works behind the camera as a martial arts stunt coordinator and has lent his expertise to The X-Men and The One with Jet-Li.
