Never was a song so well mated with an image. Flirtin with Disaster. Do the Europeans have such stuff going on, even with their Grand Prix? No way. I considered people who watch these kinds of mayhem wanted a blood sport. Then I reconsidered. If the drivers perished, it would be a sad and tragic affair. Instead of craving that, people crave excitement and the heroes that survive. They’re glad to see them make it out alive. Many of these spectators, American street and highway drivers, know what it’s all about themselves. From minor fender-benders, to cars going up in flames, to crashes that total their autos, many American drivers can relate. We drive too many miles for too many hours under the influence of goodness knows what. We crash into other last-minute shoppers in parking lots on Christmas Eve, suffer flat tires on highway 80 and 5, and avoid, if possible, the CHP check-stops on New Year’s Eve. To see these men hop out and get mad when they examine their wreckage makes our day. At least they survived. And if it was us, out on the street, our insurance rates would go sky high. Not these guys, they’re celebrities, they’re heroes.
