Neville: Young guns buoyant Phil Neville believes a number of Manchester United youngsters who caught the eye on Tour 2014 promoted by Aon will feel they are a step closer to the first team after their exploits. Louis van Gaal used the stay in the United States to assess his squad and Tyler Blackett, Reece James, Michael Keane, Jesse Lingard and Will Keane all featured. The Reds won the International Champions Cup by beating Liverpool with Ashley Young one of the senior players to enhance his reputation during the trip. Ashley Young has been the one who had an outstanding tour, explained Neville to ManUtd. He played in all the games in a different position for him at wing-back. He has obviously impressed on tour and has done himself no harm with his performances. There have been many though, who excelled themselves playing in a different system - Blackett, Lingard and Michael Keane have done really well on tour. Everyone knows how this club produces young players and Louis van Gaal, in particular, has a history of bringing up young players through the ranks at every club he has been at. They’ve come back from the tour buoyant knowing they are a step closer to gaining a first-team place. It’s been a really positive tour. I can’t think of any negatives, maybe Rafael coming home injured. I’m hoping he gets a run of games and keeps himself fit for the season. We’ve not got that much cover for the right-back position. But, in terms of results, goals and performances, it’s been really good. The ex-England international, who took part in the Legends match against Bayern Munich at the weekend, admits the pre-season was a hit off the field as well as on it. I think there’s a real buzz as the tour was amazing, he added. The support was breathtaking, absolutely breathtaking. Sometimes, with Manchester United, you don’t think it can get any better but then you go to places and all the stadiums in America were full. You go to these parts of the world and it takes your breath away and makes you feel proud and lucky to have played and be a part of such a great club as Manchester United. Hopefully, the boys can get our championship back.
