New Analytical Method Japan Group Pinpoints Nuclear Fuel Using Cosmic Rays Tokyo, Jan. 23 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese research group said Thursday it has successfully carried out an experiment to pinpoint the location and amount of nuclear fuel in a nuclear plant using cosmic rays. The method could be used to determine the location of nuclear fuel inside three reactors at Tokyo Electric Power Co.s Fukushima No. 1 plant that suffered core meltdowns after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. So far, any such investigation has been hampered by high radiation levels inside the reactors. The group, led by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, known as KEK, and the University of Tokyo, used muon elementary particles in the experiment, according to KEK. The elementary particles are capable of penetrating substances but are predisposed to attenuate considerably when they collide with high-density objects such as nuclear fuel. The research group placed measuring devices at three locations 30 to 60 meters away from the reactor building at Japan Atomic Power Co.s Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant in the village of Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture, eastern Japan.
