Please join us at a “Meet the Artists” reception on Friday September 12th at 5pm which includes a gallery talk by the artists at 5:45pm. Sue Lezon has worked as a photographer on archaeological expeditions in the Middle East, primarily in Egypt, for over thirty years. Her work has been strongly influenced by the experience of living for extended periods of time in profoundly foreign environments while working with the remains of ancient civilizations. She considers her images to contain iconographic clues to the complex inner life of ancient and contemporary cultures. When not traveling, Lezon teaches analog and digital photography at SUNY Plattsburgh. She believes in honoring the tradition of black and white, silver-based photography, and incorporates digital images into her work as well. Her photographs are a part of private and public collections worldwide. Sue received her BFA from Emerson College, and her MFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Robert began his bookmaking career at Vermont College in the spring of 2000. After designing and printing books for several years, he was so impressed by how little he knew that he went on to study book arts at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Today he prints, makes paper and hand-binds books at his studio in Chestertown, New York under the imprint of Chester Creek Press. The books and broadsides that slowly roll off Bob’s Vandercook proof press are printed from hand-set metal type, usually on handmade paper that he makes from cotton and linen rags and native plants like daylilies. His work is illustrated with drawings and woodcuts, sometimes made in collaboration with other artists. Most Chester Creek Press books are volumes of poetry by established contemporary writers. Bob’s work can be found in numerous institutional and private collections such as the Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Institution Library, the libraries of Yale and Dartmouth colleges, the New York Public Library, Yaddo, and the Town of Chester Library Book Arts Collection.
