New Delhi: The Central Government has advised the States and Union Territories to take up a large number of labour intensive works under MGNREGA keeping in view the anticipated drought like situation due to less than normal rainfall. In a written reply to question in the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Upendra Kushwaha said that States have been instructed to implement drought mitigation works like renovation of traditional water bodies including desilting of irrigation tanks and ponds, micro and minor irrigation works and creation, renovation and maintenance of irrigation canals and drains. He said, States can also undertake drought proofing works such as avenue plantation, development of barren/ fallow lands and nursery raising . Similarly water conservation and water harvesting structures can augment and improve ground water situation like underground dykes, earthern dams, stop dams, check dams, etc.
