New Features of WordPress 3.7 The WordPress community is anxiously anticipating the new 3.7 version. Less than a week ago WordPress announced the Beta 2 release, and in September unveiled some of the best upcoming features in their Beta 1 release announcement. WordPress 3.7 is arriving any day now, so what should we expect from the new version? Automatic Background Updates With WP 3.7, you won’t have to update WordPress manually: all minor security updates will be installed automatically in the background. Major releases like 3.8 will still need your input, but as far as new builds are concerned, WordPress will just update itself. Dashboard → Updates will show if your install works with automatic updates and will give you a possibility to disable automatic updates if you like. More Relevant Search Results Previously, WordPress search wasn’t among the best, so many users chose to use other search tools for their WordPress websites. You used to be able to sort results only by the date, but WP 3.7 will offer improved default search with a possibility to order search results by relevance. Posts that include your search terms in titles and content will appear on top. The search will also give more relevance to posts that contain keywords in their titles, so it’s easier to find a post if you only remember the title. More Secure Passwords The WordPress password meter used to be weak. The new release will offer more security: the updated password meter will show how strong the user’s password is. An optional “force strong password” plugin can make the user pick a stronger password, if theirs is too weak. Better Language Support If you’re using WordPress in your local language, it will automatically download available translation files for the WordPress core, default themes, and official importer plugins with every update. Perhaps, eventually this will extend to non-official plugins, too. With the previous version, you had to get a translation ready theme and install translation files manually. Advanced Date Queries for Developers With the current WordPress version, you can’t select the posts created within a certain date range. New improved date queries will make it possible for you to find the posts that were added before or after the specified date, or between certain dates. Better Inline Documentation Inline documentation for all hooks in the core will now be streamlined to make it easier for developers to study WordPress code, practice, and build functional applications for it. The WordPress code, available for every developer, was documented before, but now the documentation includes all new hooks and is even easier to use. Since WordPress is in beta 2 already, most likely these will be all new features we get with the 3.7 release. With all the improvements, version 3.7 sounds like a big step to a more functional and reliable WordPress. What new feature will you be looking forward to the most?
