New Headquarters Charges Ahead Today officially marks the final transition for 145 (South) Brigade to 11 Infantry Brigade as the flag was lowered for the last time. The new flag with the distinctive bull formally marks the Headquarters as the new Headquarters 11 Infantry Brigade and Headquarters South East. Historically, the title of 145 Brigade was first used in the First World War. However, the Brigade originated with the organisation of the volunteer forces of Great Britain into a Territorial Force in 1908. Revd Duncan Weaver began proceedings: “We gather today to mark the end of 145 Brigade and the beginning of 11 Brigade. We come looking forward to this new Brigade, recognising that the new task will be challenging and that as ever we will need God’s help, so right at the start of its life we come to God asking for his blessing and guidance on 11 Brigade.” The 11th Infantry Brigade was a British Army regular formation that served in both the First and Second World Wars. It was part of the 4th Infantry Division during the First World War. As a permanently established Regular Army division it was amongst the first to be sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of the First World War. It served on the Western Front for the duration of the war and was present during all the major offensives including the Battle of the Marne, Battle of Ypres, Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Passchendaele. Brigadier Andrew Hughes, Commander 11 Brigade said: “We have been preparing for almost a year for this. Amongst other things it has required a significant cultural change for all members of the headquarters, and we have driven this through regular staff briefings and careful consideration of our new outputs, new ways of working and working to strict priorities. I sense that everyone in the headquarters is looking forward to the challenges that the new brigade will bring. We are reconfiguring as part of Army 2020, which means 11 Infantry Brigade will be delivering new Adaptable Force outputs; very different indeed from what we have been doing until now. Between now and early December we will be setting the conditions to take under command 4 regular and 2 reserve infantry battalions. We will also establish and bed in a new mechanism for providing Firm Base functions across the South East of England”.
