New Iban association recruiting members SIBU: Persatuan Iban Baru Sibu (Perbaru), a relatively new Iban association, is providing itself as a platform for the preservation of Iban culture and traditions. Its president, Michael Lias, said Perbaru was ever ready to work with other Dayak or Iban organisations in advancing common causes. “We are still new but I believe we will build close rapport with other organisations in time to come,” he said after officiating at a ‘ngentak tiang’ (ground-breaking) ceremony for Rumah Akun Nyanggau in Nanga Kabah in Kanowit on Saturday. Also present were Perbaru deputy president Jocky Jim Ungka, Penghulu Juin Adan and Tuai Rumah Akun Nyanggau. At the function, Michael announced his personal contribution of RM1,000 for the construction of the new longhouse. Perbaru, he said, was initially known as Kelab Iban Sarawak (KIS) which was formed in June last year. He said the name was changed to Perbaru when KIS was dissolved on July 31 this year. He was appointed as its first president. So far, it has about 50 registered members. Perbaru is recruiting members. “We will organise a road show to promote our organisation,” he said. BP 8/8/13
