New InciWeb Status update: The Ox Cart fire started on June 8, 2013 and grew to over 1000 acres on June 24, 2013. The fire originated between North and South Rock Creeks; 6 miles southeast of Poncha Pass; Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area; Sangre de Cristo Mountains; Saguache Ranger District; Rio Grande National Forest. The fire is currently being managed by a Great Basin Type 2 Team . At this time the fire is not threatening human life or safety. There are no residential or commercial properties, critical infrastructure or cultural resources at risk at this time. . Objectives for Managing the Fire: 1. Provide for fire fighter safety and public safety, through hazard assessment and application of sound risk management decisions and actions. 2. Take action to prevent fire spread east and north onto Pike and San Isabel National Forest and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands and west onto BLM lands that could impact Gunnison Sage Grouse habitat. 3. Manage cost to commensurate with resource values to be protected. Current Situation: Fire crews have made good progress establishing direct line around the fire and have secured the southeast portion of the fire perimeter. Calm winds in the last couple of days has allowed helicopters to assist fire crews on the ground with continual bucket drops of water on the two spot fires that established on the Pike San Isabel NF. Crews will continue building direct hand line around the fire edge and checking for hot spots. Closures: A temporary closure remains from North Decker Creek southeast to Nieland Creek including Forest Service Roads 980 and 982.
