New: MSc Media & Communications (Data & Society) The London - TopicsExpress

New: MSc Media & Communications (Data & Society) The London School of Economics and Political Science is pleased to announce the launch of its new MSc Media & Communications (Data & Society) programme. Recent debates about the data-gathering of the NSA and social media platforms have highlighted the wider implications of a social shift towards data. This programme has been developed in response to the growing significance of intensive data-gathering in both business and government. London is the home of the largest concentration of new media startup companies in Europe, and its abundance of new data-intensive media industries and cultures make it an ideal place to pursue this degree. Housed within LSE’s Department of Media and Communications, students will also benefit from the networks facilitated by its Media Policy Project and media think-tank Polis. This year-long programme provides a critical perspective on the move towards data, and enables students to understand, evaluate and respond to the social and political contexts of data production and analytics. Students will also consider the cultural aspects, wider implications and ethical issues raised by data’s growing role within everyday life. Students take a mixture of core and optional courses, culminating in an independent research project in media and communications, which provides an ideal preparation for research or employment in media and communications and data-related fields. Students are taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, and practical classes, including methods training which reflects the expansion of data sources. The programme is aimed at students from a diverse range of backgrounds, including those with professional experience working in media and communications and data-related fields, however this is not a requirement. The skills and knowledge gained on this programme will prepare students for future careers in media and communication fields that are increasingly bound up with information systems and data development, such as: advertising and marketing, data analytics, legal and political consulting, information management, and editorial.
