New Maritime Running Challenge connects running events from three provinces Maritimers seeking an unusual fitness experience can now add a new event to their repertoire: the Maritime Running Challenge. Runners and walkers of all levels will be able to participate in any event distance in each of three Maritime races. Finishers who make it through all three events will receive a special medallion issued jointly by Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon (Halifax, NS); Emera Marathon by the Sea (Saint John, NB); and the BMO Nesbitt Burns Prince Edward Island Marathon (Charlottetown, PEI). “The timing of the events couldn’t be better,” said Mike Doyle, Marketing Director with Marathon by the Sea, who came up with the idea. “Events taking place in May, August and October allow runners to recover from one event before training for the next.” The Halifax, Saint John and Charlottetown events offer various distances for everyone, from the new runner or walker to the experienced marathoner. Here are possible challenges: • “The Climb” (10 km in Halifax on May 18th, Half Marathon in Saint John on Aug 10th), and the Full Marathon, in Charlottetown on Oct 19th) • “The Recovery” (Full marathon in Halifax, Half Marathon in Saint John and the 10k in Charlottetown) • “Half Marathon Extreme” for the distance runner whose goal is to complete three half marathons in 155 days. Interested participants should begin by registering and training for a distance at the Scotiabank Blue Nose Race Weekend on May 16-18 in Halifax; the Emera Marathon by the Sea Race Weekend in Saint John August 10; and the final event at Charlottetown race weekend on October 19. Participants must complete all three events in order to collect their Maritime Running Challenge medallion.
