New Plymouths Community Food Bank is about to hold its first open - TopicsExpress

New Plymouths Community Food Bank is about to hold its first open day. On Labour Day, October 28, the community is invited to visit the food bank as its way of saying thank you for 20 years of support. For us its very much about us doing this for them [the community], he said. Were opening it up for them to have a look because this is really their building. Without their contributions, their food, there would be no food bank. We wanted to reward them in some way. The food bank started through church groups in the late 1980s but became more organised in the early 1990s. Its first permanent home was in the Community House, near the YMCA. It moved into its present position, behind the Peace Hall on Vivian St, in 2000. We would now like to welcome the general public into the food bank, Mr Merrick said. During the 20-minute tour people will see what the food bank contains, how it is organised, how clients are assessed and what is in food parcels. Tours, conducted by food bank volunteers, begin at 1pm and finish at 3.30pm. Free parking is available in the Peace Hall car park, opposite The Taranaki Cathedral of St Mary. It is totally free but goods and money will be accepted if people want to donate. Thats entirely up to them but from our perspective, theres no obligation, Mr Merrick said.
