New Post-Symposium Tour! Visit the Kay Sekimachi Retrospective in San Diego Spend the day visiting the special exhibition: “In the Realm of Nature: Bob Stocksdale and Kay Sekimachi,” which pays tribute to two of America’s most distinguished pioneers in contemporary craft, and experience a behind-the-scenes viewing of the textile collection at the renowned Mingei International Museum, in beautiful Balboa Park, San Diego. Kay Sekimachi, (b. 1926) is one of California’s pre-eminent fiber artists. Her work, which started as weavings and wall hangings, has evolved into many permutations, often creating new versions of familiar shapes and forms, such as her woven boxes, which she began making in the 1970s, or her ethereal flax and loosely woven baskets and bowls. The day begins with a 2-hour drive south to San Diego. We will tour the special exhibition of Kay Sekimachi’s art, led by Curator Signe Mayfield. The exhibition brings together over 120 pieces from the 1950s to the present. Kay is planning to be present during the tour to sign books and answer questions. After lunch, we will go behind the scenes with the Mingeis collections manager, Sarah Winston, for a viewing of the museum’s rarely seen Asian textiles, including Japanese and Central Asian pieces. We then take reserved seats in the museum auditorium for a lecture by costume historian Melissa Leventon, one of the authors of the exhibition catalogue. There will also be time for participants to stroll famous Balboa Park, a 1200-acre urban cultural park of luxurious vegetation and museums set in historic Spanish Colonial Revival style buildings, created by architect Bertram Goodhue for the Panama-California Exposition of in 1915-16.
