New Ross is in the Diocese of Ferns & Province of Dublin. It is 67 miles S SW from Dublin. This town sends one member to Parliament: Patron, Lord Loftus. It gives title of Earl to the family of Gore. Here is a ferry into the County Kilkenny. The Crouched Friary was built on the summit of a hill in the town; but one of the friars having killed a principal inhabitant, the whole body of the people arose, put the Friars to death, & totally destroyed the friary. The Monastery of St. Saviour, for Conventual Franciscans, was erected on the site of the first foundation by Sir John Devereux. The East end of the building is now the parish church; to whom the Augustinian Friary owed its origins we are not informed but according to Ware it was founded in the reign of King Edward III.
