New TV + New Surround Sound bar = Mom in law complaining about volume (as opposed to MIL complaining about not being able to hear us when we speak at a normal volume). I tried to convince her to see a Doctor to assess her hearing (she is 80) but she does exactly the opposite of things I suggest. So, in an effort to find a sound solution that suits all of us, I started analyzing the acoustics in the TV alcove and a rough estimate of functional hearing for each of us, including frequency ranges vs perceived volume and annoyance thresholding. According to this nice little app I found (and a couple others for audio frequency generation and spectrum analyzing) MIL has about the same frequency detection abilities as Steve and I, but perceives annoyance at 59db. Bummer. There goes my streaming metal...
