New Tape Of Eric Garner Killing Shows Him Cuffed & Lifeless - The Young Turks #EricGarner From the comments - via RJ Sepulveda - I was an EMT in NYC for a while and I remember during our training our instructors always told us NOT to count on NYPD to do ANYTHING. He said it is most likely that they will see someone dying and come up to you and say I think he is hurt. I remember that vividly because the whole class started to laugh because we all knew its true. So yeah the NYPD knows CPR, but they seldom ever use it because EMS is usually close by and because most of them just dont like to do anything or know what they are doing. Here is another important thing: EMS work in two man teams why? Not just for the extra man power, but because one of them gathers patient information while they other checks vitals (Assuming the patient IS breathing). Now, what does that mean for this case? Lets assume for the moment he was breathing: 1. He needed to be put in recovery position to facilitate breathing. This did not happen which exacerbated his injuries... he was laying half on his chest and handcuffed. 2. The 2nd EMT (the male) should have been gather information about what happened prior to their arrival on the scene. Basically the cops should have voluntarily told them that a choke hold was applied (But of course that did not happen) so that the EMTs know exactly how to treat the patient. If they had known then unquestionably they would have readied a BVM (Bag Valve Mask and an oxygen tank for transport to the hospital and had an AED on standby. Lets now assume he was NOT breathing, what SHOULD have happened? 1. The SECOND it was established that he wasnt breathing the 2 EMTs needed to demand (because they control the scene at that point) that he be uncuffed so they could work on him. His head needed to be stabilized and at BVM applied (he needed to be rolled CAREFULLY on his back) and they needed to get him on the stretcher again... Carefully. With the way he was dumped (mostly by the cops) on the stretcher COULD HAVE KILLED HIM RIGHT THERE. If he has a neck injury the way they moved him could have snapped his vertebrae like a twig and ruptured vital arteries in the neck. THAT WAS A COMPLETE BREACH OF PROTOCOL! Period! This is true for moving a patient even if he was breathing on his own. Moreover, a neck brace should have been applied to stabilize him while he was on the ground and a back board also put in placed (TWO THINGS THAT CANNOT BE APPLIED TO SOMEONE WHOSE CUFFED) Therefore I conclude: That there were several breaches of NYC and NYS protocols in this case by both the NYPD and the EMTs on scene. I believe however that the EMTs were only reacting to the presence and lack of or inaccurate information being provided by the cops. I believe that the EMTs were working off of what they were being told (e.g. Oh he is breathing) instead of checking for themselves. They assumed that the police had already assessed his condition when they clearly did not. Every person there ALL the cops, and both EMTs should face various disciplinary action and the cop that applied the choke should have clearly been indicted.
