New Vehicle Tariff and Car Waivers: A case Study for President - TopicsExpress

New Vehicle Tariff and Car Waivers: A case Study for President Goodluck Jonathan Administration double standards. Recently, the Minister for Trade, Industry and Investment, Mr Olusegun Agangu ,announced Nigerias new Automobile policy and just yesterday, the Minster of Finance and the coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, announced a new 70% vehicle tariff, effective from January 2014. The new car tariff was introduced to discourage importation of the so called Used cars (TOKUNBO CARS). BUT the policy will only pave the way for smuggling, which will be the last resort for citizens desperate, to buy a car; because, for a country of more than 160 Million people, without any local production plant, without any palliatives or incentives on why they should do without cars; it would be difficult to discourage Nigerians from buying cars made outside Nigeria; when they can afford it! The same Ministry of Finance has a waiver policy for some categories of people to bring in cars into the country! The Minister of Finance did not announce that effective from January,2014, when the new vehicle tariff will kick off, car waivers will no longer be given to State governments and some others, I would call the bootlickers of the Jonathanians--To import cars into the country at the expense of generating revenue into the coffers of government! In 2013, the Federal government of Nigeria has lost more than N600 billion that could have accrued into the government coffers, to waivers granted to some individuals and companies. I think the Punch Newspapers and other media need to do some investigative journalism, and tell Nigerians, the people who benefited from the waivers that cost Nigeria close to N700billion.In the words of Mr Nicholas Okoye, CEO Anabel Group,Nigeria and the convener of the annual Nigeria Leadership Summit,he said that giving a waiver to individuals or companies, will encourage laziness and destroy innovation and creativity
