New #WhoGoesHungry Video Highlights Hunger Faced by U.S. Veterans For Immediate Release: March 6, 2014 Contact: Jen Adach, FRAC, 202-986-2200 or 202-631-3206, [email protected] Elizabeth Bartolomeo, Fenton, 202-789-7753, ebartolomeo@fenton Washington, DC – The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) debuts a new #WhoGoesHungry campaign video that calls attention to the pressing issue of hunger faced by nearly a million military veterans and their families, and how important it is to make Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits more adequate. Visit whogoeshungry.org to watch the video. The video features Rich Synek, founder and director of Feed Our Vets — a nonprofit that helps veterans and their families fight hunger — who discusses the challenges facing the veterans who visit his food pantry. “It makes me very upset that our government is not taking care of needy and hungry veterans,” said Synek. “Here they are serving our country, the greatest country in the world, the richest country in the world and you got a man in uniform coming through the Feed Our Vets food pantry. It’s poverty in uniform.” More than 900,000 veterans and 5,000 active duty soldiers rely on SNAP to put healthy, nutritious food on the table. However, in November all SNAP recipients saw their benefits reduced. And in February 2014, Congress passed a Farm Bill that cut SNAP benefits further for an estimated 850,000 households by an average of $90 per month. Watch the video — featuring a voiceover by celebrated actor Martin Sheen — and raise your voice at whogoeshungry.org. Even though the Farm Bill debate is over, the Who Goes Hungry campaign continues to ask policy makers, “Who goes hungry?” and to urge Congress and the Administration to improve SNAP benefits. Concerned Americans are encouraged to visit WhoGoesHungry.org to add their voice and make sure SNAP continues to work for people — children, seniors, veterans and working families — when they fall on hard times. The Who Goes Hungry campaign is a project of the Food Research and Action Center, the country’s leading nonprofit organization working to improve public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and under-nutrition in the United States. FRAC thanks actor and advocate Martin Sheen for providing his voice to the #WhoGoesHungry campaign.
