New Years Day! Heres my best of the previous year: The Best Films 10. Lucy - Science fiction so silly that itd have to touch on some interesting existential/moral/philosophical perspectives or be straight up kick-ass to make this list. It did both these things. 9. John Wick - Continuing this theme, John Wick doesnt just make for an amazing and oddly compelling action movie, but it created an original and intriguing crime universe to set it in. Id love to see more. 8. Edge of Tomorrow - Yet another action film with a fantastic premise. Groundhog Day meets D-Day with aliens and replaces I got you babe with a smirking Bill Pullman. Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise shine onscreen together as genuinely interesting characters. Check it out. 7. The Grand Budapest Hotel - Wes Andersons style really lends a lot to this screwball comedy. Ralph Fiennes is hysterical as a supposedly dapper concierge, but who has the foulest mouth underneath his refinery. The supporting cast will make you laugh out of sheer confusion and everything feels hand crafted with meticulous care, something the film takes pride in. 6. Big Hero Six - I get the criticism that this movie recycles quite a few stereotypes, but this film has such a vibrant animation style and a great sense of humor. Behind all that, the emotional ties between two main characters are just brilliant and they resonate long after the cool whiz bang action is over. 5. Guardians of the Galaxy - Ooga Chuga. Ooga Ooga Ooga Chuga. I dont think its as insane and risky as everyone gives it credit for, but Marvel continues to give us lovable characters... now with added 70s music and Space comedy. Youve probably seen this already. 4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - I know, three Marvel films on the list is excessive, but this film is the cream of the crop. A spy, espionage movie set in a comicbook universe that audiences cant help being invested in. Performances are rock solid and the payoff is astounding. 3. Gone Girl - Jesus. A genuinely gripping mystery which switches things up at the halfway point and engages in some daylight horror. A film so good, that Ben Aflfeck, Rosamund Pike and Tyler Perry all took it in turns to outshine one another. In a year with so many amazing films, its amazing a film like this could be this good. 2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Where to start? Planet of the Apes sounds like a silly premise, yet this movie never blinks. The film understands perspective like few other blockbusters and doesnt shy away from being both clever and full of spectacular/gripping sequences. Andy Serkis delivers some of his best work and I cant wait to see more. 1. Whiplash - While were on pespective, Im still in therapy from seeing Whiplash. In a year full of super villains, sociopaths and just really evil people, J.K. Simmons delivers a performance that outdoes them all as a musical zealot whos teaching methods are the stuff of nightmares. The premise is so amazingly simple and so the film is free to pit both him and Miles Teller against each other as we watch their characters destructive relationship tear each other apart. My favorite film of the year, by far.
