New York state has the highest concentration of people with Ukrainian ancestry than anywhere else in the U.S., with an estimated 133, 641 in 2012, according to the Census Bureau. Lyuba Shipovich, 30 years old, said she was never one to celebrate the independence holiday. Last year around this date, the software developer said, she was reveling in her newly acquired American citizenship. Now, she spends most of her free time running Razom, a nonprofit dedicated to raising and distributing money and supplies to Ukrainians in need. The groups Facebook page registers 15,000 likes. She said she remembers the exact day she was inspired to take on the mission: Nov. 30, 2013. The Ukrainian government at the time, headed by Victor Yanukovich, attacked and dispersed protesters, mostly students, gathered at Maidan Square in Kiev.
