New Yorks fracking ban will have a ripple effect across the country. If fracking isnt safe in New York, it isnt safe anywhere. This moment also marks a turning point for the mainstream environmental movement. As Wenonah Hauter from Food & Water Watch explains: It should inspire reflection among those mainstream environmental groups reluctant to take a strong stand against fracking or those who attempt to split the difference by supporting both a moratorium and stronger regulations at the same time. We need to be clear and uncompromising in calling for a ban on fracking and other extreme extraction practices. Our message to the mainstream environmental groups: Regulations on fracking DO NOT work. Regulations dont prevent destruction; regulations normalize the destructive practice, allowing that practice to continue. The true activists and warriors in this movement will settle for nothing less than an outright ban on fracking. We will ban fracking in California. We will ban fracking nationwide. And we will not settle for anything less.
