New Zealand No 2 Danny Lee has fallen just short of claiming his first victory in over two years. The 22-year-old professional shot an even-par 71 in the final round of the Rex Hospital Open on the web Tour to finish runner-up behind Chesson Hadley. The American carded an incredible seven-under-par 64 to claim the title by two shots. Lee began the final round at TPC Wakefield Plantation with a four shot lead and looking good to secure his place on the PGA Tour in 2014. But he was slow out of the blocks with six straight pars before making his first birdie of the day at the seventh. The former US Amateur champion looked in good shape when he added further birdies on the 11th and 13th but he then had a bogey at the par-4 12th. At that stage he was two under for the day and held a two shot lead. But Hadley, who played the final 10 holes in seven-under-par, was relentless, and the pressure told on Lee who bogeyed the par-5 16th to drop back into a share of the lead with two holes to play. Hadley birdied the final hole to set the clubhouse lead at 19-under and Lee was suddenly one stroke back with two holes to play. Chasing the win he bogeyed the par-4 18th to slip back to 17-under for the tournament. It was little consolation but it was his best result of the season. Rounds of 67, 66, 63 and 71 give Lee his first top five finish of 2013 and he moves from 23rd to sixth on the money list. Lee needs to finish in the top 25 players on the Order of Merit to automatically qualify for the PGA Tour in 2014.
