New Zealand Pacific Scholarships for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students in New Zealand, 2015 New Zealand Pacific Scholarships are well known scholarships which are funded by New Zealand government each year. These are open to candidates from government, civil society, private business organizations and qualified secondary school leavers to support both undergraduate and postgraduate study at the 10 identified New Zealand education institutions for study beginning in 2015 academic year. All awardees are required to return to their home country for a minimum period of two years following completion of their scholarship in order to contribute to their country’s economic and social development. Each country has different eligibility criteria, application procedure and closing date. Study Subject(s): For Cook Islands: Scholarships are available for the following subjects: Agriculture, Education (Secondary teaching: especially for Maths and Science subjects), Finance management, Health, ICT, Marine Resources/Fisheries, Renewable energy, Trade areas, Waste management and Other areas may be included (excluding Aviation, Civil Engineering and Architectural studies). For Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Palau: Agriculture and fisheries, Environmental studies, Leadership and governance, Economics, Public sector governance and reform/Economics, Human rights and gender, Education and Health. For Nauru: Leadership and governance, Public sector governance and reform/Economics, Human rights and gender/Education, Environmental studies, ICT and Building Industry and industrial development. For Fiji: Agriculture, Forestry, Finance and economics, Disaster risk management Education and Health. For Kiribati: Education, Health, Leadership and management, Infrastructure development, Youth and leadership, Sustainable economic development, strengthening the performance of the Public Sector and Urban development. For Niue: Economic Development, Social Services Development and Good Governance. Papua For New Guinea: Energy, Fresh produce/Agriculture and Other Rural economic development. For Solomon Islands: Engineering, Science, Public Policy Planning and Administration, Business Management, Commerce, Economics, Finance and Accounting, Economic Development and Human Development. For Samoa: Engineering science including transportation, earth sciences and infrastructure, Public policy planning and administration, Business management, commerce, economics, finance and accounting, Economic development including fisheries, tourism, forestry and management and Human development including health and education. For Tonga: Sustainable economic development, Education For Tuvalu: Good governance, growth and stability of the economy, Public sector financial management, Social development including education and human resources, Falekaupule and Outer Islands, Private sector and employment, Natural resources, infrastructure and support services and English language including training of English teachers For Vanuatu: Economic, Education and Governance Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate (undergraduate diploma and Bachelor) and postgraduate programme (Postgraduate Certificate Postgraduate Diploma, Master (research and/or coursework) and Doctoral ) in New Zealand except Fiji in which scholarships are awarded for postgraduate study (Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters (research and/or coursework) Doctoral). Scholarship Provider: New Zealand Pacific Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme. Scholarship can be taken at: New Zealand Eligibility: Awards are open to candidates from government, civil society, private business organisations and qualified secondary school leavers. To be eligible, applicants must: -Be a citizen of your country and have resided there for at least two years at the time of application (permanent residents are not eligible to apply). You must also reside in your country of citizenship during the application and selection process. -For those applying directly from Secondary school, have completed their senior schooling in your country. -For those currently enrolled in the first year of study at any national learning institution in a course in line with the priority subject areas, applicants must obtain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.60. -For all other candidates, have been working in your country for at least two years prior to application. -Be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to your country’s public, private or civil society sector and to the development of your country in general. -Agree in writing that you will return to your country for a minimum of two years following completion of your Scholarship in order to contribute to your country’s social or economic development. -Be available to take up the Scholarship in the calendar year for which the Scholarship is offered. -Satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand institution in which the degree programme is to be undertaken, including the institution’s English language criteria. -Be able to satisfy Immigration New Zealand requirements for international student entry to New Zealand (i.e. medical checks, police clearances/character checks, etc). -Not be seeking funding for a qualification already commenced in New Zealand or another country. -Be aged 17 or over before the Scholarship start date. -Not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia (except for Pacific countries who also have New Zealand citizenship). -Not hold or have held a New Zealand Government or Australian Government Scholarship in the preceding 24 months at the time of application. English Language Requirements: A high standard of English is required. New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. All applicants should check the IELTS (International English Language Testing System, academic stream) or TOEFL (Testing of English as a Foreign Language) score required for admission to their selected New Zealand education institution. -For postgraduate study, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications, particularly education or PhD programmes, may require a higher score. -For undergraduate study, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, with no band less than 5.5. Some qualifications, particularly health or education qualifications, may require a higher score. Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The students of Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga Tuvalu, Vanuatu can apply for the scholarships. Scholarship Description: New Zealand Pacific Scholarships (NZPS) recognise the very close personal, cultural, and economic ties that New Zealand enjoys with Pacific countries. A particular focus of NZPS is to increase the number of young students and high academic achievers studying in New Zealand and to build a new generation of Pacific leadership with strong links to New Zealand. NZPS are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme. They are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. NZPS are for both undergraduate and postgraduate study in New Zealand and are available to candidates from the following countries in the Pacific region. Number of award(s): Up to 6 scholarships are available for Cook Island and Nauru applicants. Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded to the Fiji applicants. Up to 6 scholarships are available to applicants from the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands and Palau. Up to 15 scholarships plus up to 2 undergraduate scholarships for graduates from the Kiribati Marine Training Centre are available for Kiribati applicants. Only 54 scholarships will be available to applicants from Papua New Guinea. 45 scholarships are available to Samoan applicants. Twenty Four (24) scholarship awards will be offered to Solomon Islands. 23 NZPS are allocated to Tonga (17 multiyear and 6 single year study). Up to 9 NZPS are available to Tuvalu applicants. Up to 18 scholarships are available to Ni-Vanuatu applicants (12 undergraduate and 6 postgraduate). Up to four NZPS will be offered to eligible candidates from Niue. Duration of award(s): NZPS are awarded for the whole duration of the programme. What does it cover? Selection Criteria: After the closing date, all complete applications for Scholarships will be assessed taking into account the following criteria: -Development priorities: Alignment of the course with the priority sectors -Work Experience: Work experience in the chosen field of study, for those employed -Gender Equity: Women are encouraged to apply and the aim is to ensure that there are approximately equal numbers of women and men in each category (diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD) -High academic results -Leadership potential Notification: Shortlisted Scholarship applicants will be advised whether they will be required to attend an interview and undertake English language tests. Please ensure that you respond to any requests for additional information in a timely manner to ensure your application can be considered for a Scholarship. Shortlisted candidates will be advised whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship. Letters of Offer for in-service applicants are typically issued in October and November each year. How to Apply: Cook Islands: Applicants will need to collect a preliminary application form from the Cook Islands Ministry of Education or from their website. Preliminary applications should be sent directly to the same Ministry by 30 April. For Palau, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Marshall Islands: -Applicants apply directly to one of the 10 eligible New Zealand education institutions before 30 April 2014 using their usual application process for international students. Include a cover letter with your request for admission which advises the institution that you also intend to apply for a New Zealand Scholarship. Information about eligible institutions is available here. -Download the New Zealand Scholarships application form and complete all sections. -Gather all documents requested on the application form. -Once you receive admission to a New Zealand institution, send your completed Scholarship application form, letter of admission, and all other required documents by 21 June to the Scholarship Officer, Education Department, Republic of Nauru. Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands: -Download the New Zealand Scholarships application form and complete all sections. -Gather all documents requested on the application form. -Send your completed application form and documents to the New Zealand High Commission by 30 April of each year. Vanuatu: Applicants will need to obtain an Expression of Interest form (EOI) from the Vanuatu Training and Scholarships Coordination Unit in Port Vila by 31 May. Scholarship Application Deadline: Application deadlines are: 30 April (Kiribati, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu) and 31st May (Vanuatu).
