New Zealands claim to inventing the flat white form of coffee may be fiercely contested, but it seems no-one is mounting a serious challenge to its role in developing instant coffee. Until a few years ago it was largely forgotten that the first commercial instant coffee was made in Invercargill by David Strang, who owned a coffee and spice works factory.
