New Zealand’s copyright law needs a rethink. The Copyright - TopicsExpress

New Zealand’s copyright law needs a rethink. The Copyright Act is a print-oriented antiquity with ad hoc digital add-ons. The only change has been the flawed “three strikes” amendment penalising peer-to-peer file sharing. Meanwhile countries like the US, UK, and Australia as well as the European Union have started to tackle the need to set balanced rules in a digital age. More and more Kiwis circumvent the Netflix geo-block – a process that is of questionable legality. This is a clear indication that people are prepared to pay for content. We need to make legitimate content available to New Zealanders at the same time everyone else. This is how we reduce piracy. Under the current model, New Zealanders are sitting, with credit cards in hand, unable to purchase the content they want without potentially illegal work-arounds. You can’t blame them for wanting to watch the latest episode of their favourite shows. After all we’re connected to a global Internet community, with spoilers published in a matter of minutes. We’re going to change this. The Internet Party understands the issues and our proposals will benefit content creators as well as the average user. Check out our draft Copyright Policy, and as usual, members are encouraged to get involved in the discussion.
