New admin units to operate from rented accommodations Rs 1200 cr to be spent on infrastructure, 5000 new jobs on cards ABID BASHIR Srinagar, July 10: As the Revenue department gives final touches to the proposal to make 659 new administrative units operational, most of the offices shall have to operate from rented accommodations although the government would be spending a whopping Rs 1200 crore on infrastructure for the new units. Interestingly, the cash-starved JK will have to dish out Rs 130 crore annually for the salaries and travel allowance of officers to be deployed in the new administrative units. According to sources, the Revenue department has submitted the proposal for making the new administrative units operational to the General Administration Department (GAD), for tabling before the Cabinet. “The proposal will be on the agenda of Cabinet meeting scheduled next week,” they said. The state government had in February this year approved creation of 659 new administrative units and 2550 Patwar halqas. The issue had snowballed into a major political controversy between NC and Congress and was settled down following the intervention of Congress high command. A senior Revenue officer said at least 70 percent of the offices of the new administrative units would operate from rented accommodations across JK. “Given the space constraints, government has no alternative but to go for rented accommodation to make the new units functional,” he said. He said the government will be spending around Rs 1200 crore for the infrastructure needs of the new units to be released in a phased manner stretched over a period of five years. “At least, 5000 new officials would have to be recruited to man the new administrative units. These include Sub-District Magistrates, Tehsildars, Block Development Officers and clerks,” the official said. Meanwhile, the government has begun the exercise to accommodate the left-over areas as well in the allocation of administrative units. “Financial Commissioner Industries, Khursheed Ganai will chair a meeting of the Deputy Commissioners of Jammu region on July 10 to take review the fresh demands for new units,” sources said.
