New blog post: Construction is slated to begin next year on a major development that is expected to change the landscape at one of Columbia’s business intersections. Homes Urban, a Greenville-based developer, announced it has purchased the Kline Iron and Steel Co. property on the corner of Gervais and Huger streets. Kline operated there from 1923 until 2004. Officials at Homes Urban said the primary focus of the site will be luxury housing aimed at young professionals. Homes Urban is an affiliate of Davis Property Group, which has apartment properties around the Southeast. “We are excited to have Homes Urban as our partner on this project,” said Jerry Kline, former president of Kline Iron and Steel. The land purchased by Homes Urban has been in the Kline family for almost 100 years. “We know it is being entrusted to the right people who will do great things for the surrounding community,” Kline said. Plans for the site include an apartment complex with more than 280 units, a 680-space parking garage, office and retails space and a hotel. Officials said more parking will be created for the nearby South Carolina State Museum and EdVenture Children’s Museum. “We are really excited to have the opportunity to develop this property,” said Russ Davis, partner at Homes Urban. “We have long wanted to find a site in Columbia that fits our particular strengths and this property has been at the top of our list.” Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2015.
