New captain, new all-rounder and new number-3 batsman to represent Cape Cobras against Lions A renewed focus on striking regularly with the ball in order to win the two Sunfoil Series games prior to the resumption of the domestic one-day competition, a dramatic improvement in their fielding and the ability to secure a seamless transition in the absence of the injured Justin Kemp, will be vital for the Nashua Cape Cobras, suggested Paul Adams, the coach. The Cobras and the bizhub Highveld Lions will clash from Thursday 8th January at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Dane Vilas, the regular vice-captain, will lead the Cobras in the four-day match. Kemp, side-lined due to a groin injury after scoring 73 in his first Sunfoil Series game of the season, will be replaced by the talented Shaheen Khan. Khan is a swing bowler and will be keen to underline his all-rounder credentials following a promising season for the Cricket South Africa 3-day champions, Western Province. Adams said last season, the Nashua Cape Cobras took half chances that came in their direction. This season they have dropped a number of catches. They are keen to show improvement in this discipline. They have also discussed their bowling at length. Adams said he impressed upon his side the critical aspect of improving their execution and on taking 20 wickets, giving the defending champions a realistic chance of winning their remaining two four-day matches prior to the Momentum One-Day Cup competition. George Linde, left-arm spinner, will return to the team for the match against the Lions. Keegan Petersen (21) will bat at number three for the Cobras. The inclusion of Linde, Petersen, Khan and Dane Paterson offer opportunities to young players to show-case their talent at a higher level, said Adams. Petersen is a rookie that has had exposure at the academy and for an Invitational X1 against the West Indies, and would want to grab the chances to excel for the Cobras, added the coach Adams was not perturbed by the performance against the Chevrolet Knights in Paarl, where the Cobras batted for almost two days in scoring 514. He said the Cobras knew after the second day that they had to bat time to save the game, and adapted very well in compiling big partnerships to guide the team to a comprehensive score. The starting team will be announced on Wednesday 7th January.
